2020: COVID Cats
The 2020 season was one of the most challenging and unpredictable years in Sumrall football history, shaped heavily by the effects of COVID-19, schedule disruptions, and multiple forfeits. In his 10th season as head coach, Shannon White guided the Bobcats through constant uncertainty, with shifting opponents, game cancellations, and abrupt changes that tested the resilience of players and staff alike. Despite these obstacles, Sumrall remained competitive, battling through a demanding schedule and finishing the regular season with a 4–8 overall record and a 2–3 mark in district play, while continuing to show grit and determination each week.
Sumrall’s perseverance carried into the postseason, where the Bobcats earned back-to-back playoff victories over Richland and Lawrence County to reach the third round. Their season ended in heartbreaking fashion with a narrow 26–19 loss to Mendenhall, decided in the final minutes of the game. Though the ending was painful, the 2020 team is remembered for its toughness, unity, and refusal to quit during one of the most trying and improbable seasons in program history. Their ability to push deep into the playoffs amid unprecedented circumstances stands as a testament to their character and resolve.
